Personalized Wedding Invitations

How personalized wedding invitations used to be made

Around 1642, a German gentleman by the name of Ludwig von Seigen invented metal-plate engraving. With this invention he was able to make personalized wedding invitations. The engraving was done by somebody hand-writing the text in reverse onto a warm sheet of metal (or carved into a cool sheet of metal using a carving tool). This was then transferred using plating, which resulted in beautifully engraved personalized wedding invitations. The invitations were kept free of smudges by placing a sheet of tissue paper on top; to this day that tradition is still carried on.

More about the history of personalized wedding invitations

While today's personalized wedding invitations are certainly lavish and beautiful affairs, they do not quite compare to the personalized wedding invitations that were made hundreds of years ago. Back then, each wedding invitation was literally hand-crafted. In addition, each guest of the wedding would typically be treated to a personalized wedding invitation that had his name engraved on it. These days, some couples choose to include the names of their guests on their personalized wedding invitations, but most do not, as it would be quite costly and somewhat time consuming.
